dodo

dodo
The dodo was a bird which was once to be found in Mauritius, but it has long been extinct. It had a massive clumsy body and small wings that were useless for flight. Its ridiculous appearance and movements caused the Portuguese to name it dondo, ‘fool’. It is almost fitting, then, that the English form of the word, ‘dodo’, lives on as a slang term for a silly person. ‘You dumb dodo’ is spoken by a man and addressed to a woman in Last Tango in Paris, by Robert Alley. In the idiosyncratic spelling of a young black American prostitute it emerges as ‘you dum doe doe’ in One Hundred Dollar Misunderstanding, by Robert Gover.
